This open edition print pairs a historic 1871 photograph by renowned landscape photographer Carleton E. Watkins with a modern photograph of Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park captured more than 150 years later by photographer Kial James.
Once one of the largest hydraulic mining operations in the world, Malakoff Diggins dramatically reshaped the landscape of Nevada County during the California Gold Rush. The towering cliffs visible today are the result of powerful hydraulic mining cannons that washed entire hillsides away in search of gold.
