The City Built on Gold

What you see in Nevada City is only part of the story.

Beneath these streets lies one of the richest gold mining regions in California.

Founded in 1849, Nevada City quickly became one of the most important mining towns in the Sierra foothills. Early placer mining gave way to hard rock mining, with tunnels extending deep into the surrounding hills.

At its peak, the region produced millions of dollars in gold, helping shape Northern California's economy during the Gold Rush.

The buildings that line Broad Street today tell only part of that story.

Fires, rebuilds, and decades of change reshaped the town, but Nevada City endured where many others disappeared. Its historic downtown remains one of the best-preserved Gold Rush districts in California.

Today, Nevada City is something rare.

A living Gold Rush town — where the history isn’t just preserved, it’s still part of daily life.
